Due to its excellent capability to penetrate the skin, glycolic acid finds applications in skincare products, most often as a chemical peel performed by a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or licensed aesthetician in concentrations of 20 to 70% or at-home kits in lower concentrations between 10 and 20%. In addition to concentration, pH also plays a large part in determining the potency of glycolic acid in the solution.

Quickly apply the product to the treatment area, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Allow initial contact time of 1 minute, remove with copious amounts of water. Adjust time as skin tolerance increases. If persistent redness or irritation occurs, discontinue use. Follow peel treatment with SPF and moisturizer. The goal with a safe peeling regimen is to cause the skin to come off in a controlled way, with each peel taking off a few more layers of accumulated skin. With each application of the peel, the results are incremental. You should notice results within the first couple of applications, and the tone and texture of your skin will continue to improve as the layers of old skin are slowly removed to reveal new skin beneath.
